Sleeper

Hey look! I finished this finally!!

I also learned I don't actually own After Effects so I ended up using a screen cap software to get in Maya video of the animation I quickly did to get an idea of movement, which is why there are no alphas on it in the video.

Still! The model is finished, it's rigged well enough to be usable, and I'm very pleased with the result, even if it took me many, many hours to do.

More progress

So funny story: After I moved on to the antlers I realized my UV maps were not set up in such a way that would allow me to get the detail I needed.

To remedy this I ended up redoing about 85-90% of them.

But the result is much better and! I have progress to share that is considerable. All I've got left in terms of fur rendering is the back legs and hooves, and then I can move on to antlers and crystals. Once I finish the textures I'm hoping I can finally pose and render this literal beast.

Sleeper Progress

I feel like a fool for 1. taking such long breaks between texturing this and 2. taking so long to figure out unlit rendering. I am the fool, it is me.

Working on texturing the main body at this point. I'm still not entirely sure the direction I'm going, which is part of why it's taking so long, but I like the result I've got so far. I need to go back in and break up the fur on the neck to not be so uniform but otherwise I am pleased so far with the results.

I finished up Epona in about 10 days after having to deal with other stuff. Overall, I'm really happy with the result for the time I finished in. There are some seams that I can't get rid of, no matter what I do, and I'm not entirely certain they're texture/normal related. I'm not sure how to solve the problem, in any case..

But! Regardless, I am very pleased with the result. If I changed anything right now, it would be her face, and that would mostly just be giving it an expression.

Started texturing the Sleeper Model. Also started a centaur model, based losely off the goddess Epona. Or at least, for the sake of simplicity, I'm calling her Epona.

I worked on this model a few months ago, and ended up not liking the direction it was going, so I've spent today fixing the hair and  face, and completely scrapped the clothes to try again. Here's hoping round 2 goes better.

I'm also going to most likely have to reposition her arms. I'm not sure what possessed me to model them like that...

Also, before I forget, here is progress on the Sleeper model. Texturing it right now

And one unlit, dirty render to show the transparency on the fur:

That's all for now!

Not a lot to update on the Sleeper model, as I'm trying to rig it and that is taking a lot longer than I anticipated. Instead, have this other model I'm almost done with:

Sitting at about 3K tris, also in the process of being rigged. Digitigrade legs are hard to rig and make deform properly.

Have an update, with 3D stuff!

Some artist friends and I did a sort of round robin with character concepts, where we roughed out a bunch of ideas then passed them along to see what would happen with the final product for a Guardian design. The only thing we all were in immediate agreement on was crazy antlers.

So my initial brush sketches where I tried to get an idea for the silhouette:

and then Alyson Phillips ended up doing our final Concept image for the creature, which I then have modeled. This is the base mesh, the UV's our laid out. All it needs is texture which will come in the next week or two, hopefully. Barring any outside work.

Finished Bastet up!

There are some hiccups in the rig that I forgot to account for, but they are super simple to fix and as of right now I just wanted to get her posed.

On to other projects!

Remember this thing?!

I've had to put the Lil Egypt series aside for a long time to work on contract stuff, but now that my contracts are over I picked it back up and hammered Bastet out over the past few days.

I plan to rig, pose and get some nice renders of her over the course of the week, while also working on some other models.

Base model concept.

Thursday, October 31, 2013

Base mesh of Lil Bastet. I received the artist's permission to model the entire series, and I'm starting with her.

Currently unwrapping her, then will throw her into Zbrush for some detailing then retop her. Currently she's at roughly 1700 tris. Hoping to get considerably lower than that.

Colored Nagi

Have the base textures for Nagi done. I had to put the model on hold for a while in favor of potential employment but I've finally made enough progress to show again. Now it's down to rigging, map tweaks and renders before she's done.

Nagi Zbrush

ZBrushing the model! Still tweaking the hands and legs to where I'm happy with them, but for the most part this is done.

Nagi Base Model

Base model for Nagi, the guide.

Next up, unwrapping and ZBrushing

Raptor Test Animation

Test animation. I'm still trying to get the knack for compressing videos without slaughtering the quality, but everything is still clear.

Riding Raptor

Tried out 4K maps for this beast. I like and don't like it. On on hand I get get a lot of detail in and it makes it easier for me to be loose, on the other it's also very easy to get unruly and it's easy to focus too much on details and makes things look bad later.

I am going to probably re-rig the model, and tweak it some more should I decide to animate this model. But for now I am going to call it "done".

Art by me.

Render from another view. Before I fixed the ugly seam.

Bust Sculpt

I spent the time between rendering my reel doing a bust sculpt in ZBrush of one of my more favorite celebrities.

Mr. Clint Eastwood.

Emaciated

I revisited my emaciated figure from the Monk model. I liked the figure as a stand alone model so I refined and finished it. I plan to do another study or two of this body type, possibly trying one preposed in ZBrush.

That's all for now. Busy tying my reel together.
